Curriculum targets

The UK's National Curriculum sets out eight main aims which educators in the UK should try to achieve. The Day has something to offer for each of them:

Promote high standards, particularly in literacy, numeracy and ICT capability.

The Day stories promote literacy by engaging students with reading and by encouraging them to write responses. Difficult words are explained in a glossary, which is archived and searchable as a persistent resource.

Provide continued entitlement from early years to a coherent, broad and balanced curriculum.

The Day provides stories relevant to all parts of the curriculum, from Geography and Science to Art and PSHE.

alt

Instil in children a positive disposition to learning and a commitment to learn.

The Day makes curriculum subjects interesting by connecting them to hot topics for discussion. Stories show how learning is useful by showing how skills apply to major events and trends from the outside world.

alt

Promote and pass on essential knowledge, skills and understanding valued by society to the next generation.

The Day promotes knowledge that is of vital importance for society. Stories examine the basis of law and government, global challenges and issues, great artistic achievements both past and present and new ideas that will shape the world to come.

alt

Be relevant to children and prepare them for the here and now, for the next phase of their education, and for their future.

The Day stories often cover issues that have huge relevance to the immediate prospects of students: how do university admissions processes work? Why do some young people join gangs? How do expectations of success effect academic achievement. Stories encourage positive and empowered attitudes.

alt

Widen horizons and raise aspirations about the world of work and further and higher education.

The Day stories demystify the world of work, and show how society functions. The Day is a portal to the media sector and provides inspiring stories of achievement.

alt

Make children more aware of, and engaged with, their local, national and international communities.

The Day is a perfect introduction to the wider world beyond the school gates. Stories cover issues from the local to the truly global.

alt

Help children recognise that personal development is essential to wellbeing and success.

The Day aims to open new horizons for students, broadening their understanding and inspiring them to try to achieve their full potential.
